The Vallon des Auffes
The Vallon des Auffes is a small traditional fishing port located along the Corniche in the Endoume district (7th arrondissement of Marseille), halfway between the facing Frioul Islands and the dominating Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde on the heights of the city. Sheltered behind large arches and between cliffs, this place has preserved its authentic character over time, closely tied to Marseille's historical maritime activity.
History and Origin of the Name "Vallon des Auffes"
The origin of the name "Auffes" (from Provençal "Auffo") refers to the "alfa" plant (Stipa tenacissima), a perennial and fibrous herb of Mediterranean origin that was used in the Vallon des Auffes from 1750. Whether around the Vieux-port or at the Vallon des Auffes, the "auffiers" artisans crafted various products, including wickerwork, fishing nets and ship ropes. One can easily imagine the bustling activity in the Vallon des Auffes, the daily lives of seafaring men from the past centuries, and their frequent journeys between the port and their favorite fishing grounds around the Frioul Islands. Not to mention their visits to express gratitude to the "Bonne Mère" (Notre Dame de la Garde) and leaving behind some ex-votos on occasion.
Access and Points of Interest
To visit the Vallon des Auffes, access can be found not far from the "Monument aux morts de l'Armée d'Orient et des terres lointaines" (Monument to the dead of the Army of the Orient and distant lands) through a long, narrow staircase that descends from the Corniche, immersing visitors in the unique atmosphere cherished by both locals and tourists. During a stroll along the cliffside cabins and the harbor filled with fishing boats and traditional "pointus" boats of Marseille, you will discover a passage behind the arches leading to the only public and free maritime pool in Marseille. The Vallon des Auffes also offers an ideal setting to dine at restaurants, with several renowned addresses in Marseille known for their local specialties going directly from the sea to the plate.
